Review for Whiskey sour by J.A. Konrath

I just finished the first book in the Jack Daniels story, Whiskey sour. Now I realize I kind of hopped around and I apologize for that but I actually didn’t get interested in the Jack Daniels series until after reading Stirred.

I truly enjoyed this book. We are introduced to Jack and find out how she met Phinn and Lathum. I also got a bit of a back story on her and Harry I hadn’t read before this book.
Jack has been a cop for a good eighteen years by this story and has already claimed the rank of lieutenant. Jack is working the gingerbread man case. This book heats up fairly quick. I like fast paced. It keeps you interested. This book to me didn’t seem as frightening as some of the others in the series. None the less a fast paced, funny and thrilling read.
J.A Konrath makes this books fun to read and they are so worth the money you spend on them.
That’s it for now.
Till next time
Keep reading.

Review for shaken by J.A. Konrath

Posted in Book Reviews, books, horror, reading, reviews with tags , , on February 23, 2013 by firequeen3

Okay, so here we are again. I just finished Shaken.
This book was great. It shifted between three different points in jacks life.
The first when she’s a new cop. The second 18 years into her career. Then the third is present day.
They all have to do with the same serial killers. The infamous Mr. K and another with a taste for dismembering escorts.
The shift between the three different periods is effortless.
While I have to say I didn’t enjoy this one as much as the last few it is still a great read. I enjoy reading a book that keeps me guessing and this one did. I also enjoy books that scare me and in that department I’m afraid this one fell a bit flat. Like I said though this is still a great story.
Jack is in a bit of a bind. Literally, jack awakes bound up in a storage container. It really does look like the end for jack. Not only that Jack and her new boyfriend Phinn find themselves with a bit of a surprise.
In the end jacks partner and lover and friends can’t find her but she is saved by someone you wouldn’t expect.

Well worth the read.
I realized that this being the last bookmark I read that I have not read the first in this series so whiskey sour will b my next review.
Till then keep reading.

Review on Cherry Bomb by J.A. Konrath ( spoiler alert

Posted in Book Reviews with tags , , on February 22, 2013 by firequeen3

I finished Cherry bomb las night and I actually did a review but somehow it was deleted 😩 .

In Fuzzy navel which I actually finished @ 10:30 on Wednesday night Konrath left us with one of jacks loved ones dead. I couldn’t believe it I was like no way you can’t leave me hanging like that. I immediately purchased cherry bomb. I am so glad I did too. It was worth ever penny.
This book was thrillingly entertaining.
I cried. I laughed. I was shocked and surprised.

Alex Kork is back in this book and as bad as ever. Alex gets 50% of this book which I actually loved. Alex pushes jack to her limits in this book. She has Jack questioning everything.

As Alex gets her 50% of the so does Jack get the other 50%.
Jack questions her sanity at points in this book. She even has turmoil with some of the very people she has tried so hard to protect.
Will good win out against bad? I wasn’t sure throughout a good part of this book.
Alex is definitely on her game in this book.

Jack stumbles aand does fall in this book which really surprised me yet at the same time it impressed me also.
In these books you see or view Jack as this hard ass tough as nails cop.
In this one though Konrath really let’s all Jacks softer sides be seen.
This book is funny yet terrifying.
I found my self laughing at times, on the edge of my seat at times, crying and terrified at times.
You really do feel like you are on roller coaster ride.
One of the best Jack Daniels books in the series.

I will be reviewing shaken next I know your probably thinking I skipped one but I assure you I haven’t. As I had stated before I didn’t start off reading this series in order I had read stirred after reading birds of prey by J.A. Konrath and Blake Crouch. The review for it is in my list of reviews.
Till next time keep reading.

Review for Fuzzy Navel by J.A. Konrath (spoiler alert)

Posted in Book Reviews, books, horror, reading, reviews with tags , , on February 21, 2013 by firequeen3

So, I’m back and I am continuing with J.A. Konrath’s Jack Daniels series. I have finished Fuzzy Navel.
I have to say that this by far has to be my favorite of the Jack Daniels series so far.
I love how Konrath did this story in real time. Alex Kork is one of my favorite villains of his.

All of the characters seem to get their time but as u can imagine, most of the time is divided between Jack, Alex and the 3 other bad guys.
This day seems to never end. It starts with Jack and her partner Herb arriving at a shooting done by a sniper bent on killing sex offenders. Alex find Jacks new suburban home. Jacks mother is the only one home at the time. Jacks new fiancé Latham shows up soon. Jacks mother contacts her asking her to please come home. Jack does so after getting herb to cover for her.
That’s when things really start to go bad for jack and her loved ones. The sniper fears jack saw him when he was fleeing the scene of the shooting. He and his other sniper buddy’s surround Jacks house and things go from bad to worse for jack and company.
We find out some new family secrets from Jacks mother. Jack and everyone she cares about are pushed to their limits. Jack learns she can not protect those she loves. Makes her question not only herself but her ability as a cop.
This book is exciting, fun and action packed.
I hope you will take the time to check this book out.
That’s it for now.
Till next time.

Review for Dirty Martini by J.A. Konrath

Posted in Book Reviews, books, horror, reading, reviews with tags , , , , on February 19, 2013 by firequeen3

I know I had promised to review Afraid by Killborn but I thought it only right to finish the Jack Daniels series since I have kind of jumped around in this series.

So I am reviewing Dirty Martini by J.A. Konrath.
In this book jack finds herself dealing with an unknown killer who prefers to dose food with deadly diseases and chemicals.
She gets the first call just as her boyfriend has popped the question. Talk about bad timing on the killers part.
Also she finds out the her partners transfer she hadn’t known about went through. To top it off while in a cleaning rage she finds a letter meant for her when her mother thought she was going to die. Jack finds out her father isn’t really dead and that he up and left her mom and her.
We have some pretty heavy personal stuff going on amongst this crazed killer with a jet injector armed with some of the deadliest chemicals knows to man.
Just another day for Det. Jack Daniels.

That’s it for now. Be sure to check out this book and the whole series so far I am hooked.
Till next time when I will be reviewing Fuzzy Navel by J.A. Konrath.
Crista 🙂

Review for With A Twist by J.A. Knorath

Posted in Book Reviews, reviews with tags , , , on January 8, 2013 by firequeen3

This particular book by J.A. Konrath is a short story but still follows one of his most beloved heroines. Jack Daniels.
What made this short story stand out to me is that Mr. Konrath wastes no time pulling his readers into this puzzler of a story.
The basis is that Lt. Daniels and her partner herb have come to the scene of an apparent suicide?murder? The victim apparently took a fall from great heights but he is face down in his living room.
The scene is consistent with a fall from great heights except for the fact that the victim is in his own living room. Begging the question did he commit suicide and have help or was he murdered and was the scene in the house staged?

I highly recommend this book to anyone even if you are not an avid Konrath reader.
Will be back soon with another book I have read while I have been away.

My Review for Trapped by J. A. Konrath

Posted in Book Reviews, reading with tags , on February 14, 2012 by firequeen3

Okay so here I am again. I read Trapped by JA Konrath. An amazing piece of writing for sure. Konrath has an amazing ability to put people in immediate danger and leaves the reader staring with their mouth agape.

While I am not a big fan of the canabals story’s. BUT>>> Again konrath has this amazing ability to just grab the reader and not let go until the very end. I myself have written books and story’s where there are canibal’s though. So not that there is anything wrong with it at all It’s just I guess he was very graphic and I found myself actually cringing at some parts and that is not easy to do with me as I have a very strong stomach and nerve for these things. for me though even though I knew what was going to happen I couldn’t bring myself to stop reading or skip over that part I had to read on. I had to know every little detail.

Anyway this book is filled with twists and turns and you find your self feeling as if you are running through the woods with this victim or villain either wanting or feeling the need to live to go on or to kill.

It’s an amazing feeling when a book just simply carry’s you along with it as if you were one with the book. It’s probably why I am such a huge fan of Crouch and Konrath they both have this ability. As do others I read.

The premiss for this book is a group of eight are on a camping trip. There is diversity in the characters. They all come from different walks of life. They all end up stranded on this island which is inhabited by a bunch of canabal’s and an evil doctor ( who truly could be a modern-day Frankenstein.) and his little band of experiments. they are all the same in one way. That they enjoy torture and murder. Yet they are all very different in likes and needs and physical.

The dynamics between the doctor and his murders is unique as is the dynamics between the group trying to survive.

This book also has a first draft included in it along with an excerpt from a couple of other Konrath books. One was Endurance which I have read and would truly recommend to anyone. It’s an amazing book. and also from one I haven’t read afraid. but I do plan on reading. the excerpt left me wanting more. I have started reading the first draft of Trapped a lot of the beginning is the same as in the published book but konrath promises there are areas it is different more intense and so again here I am reading on over parts I have already read because I can’t wait to see what has been changed what is more dark or extreme in it. Also he said there is a different sub plot and ending and so I am interested to read that.

Okay so I finished the first draft of Trapped yesterday I have to say I enjoyed the first draft more There was probably one part I liked better in the published version. (don’t get me wrong I enjoyed them both) I however did enjoy the first draft version more. I did a lot of rereading of stuff i had already read having read the published version first. But it was very worth it. The reasoning for one of our heroins being so afraid of the dark became more evident to me. In the published version it was very mild and you could see why she was afraid of the dark but nothing else really. But in the first draft Konrath delved into a darker more understandable version (at least for this reader.) the villains for the most part were the same except one. Towards the end one of our villains who comes face to face with the main heroin is indeed one from her past one that has tormented her day and night. I enjoyed that and it really ramped up the emotions in the book. Also the end of the first draft was great and it even left it open for one of our villains to return which I would have enjoyed. He was one of those villains you love to hate. So all in all I enjoyed the both except I preferred the first draft to the published version.

None the less I still highly recommend this book although I will tell you DON’T eat while reading this. LOL

That’s it for now.

Till next time.
